Note: There have been many things written on the orgins of gargoylesNote: There have been many things written on the origins of gargoyles. Various evolutionary theories have been presented, but there have been fewer creationist theories and or stories written. This is one such story about how gargoyles came to be and why they turn to stone. Parts of the Bible will be quoted directly, but for the sake of continuity with my original text, will not be set aside with quotation marks. I will be trying to capture the tone and use of language used, so the work will not be as free flowing as most fanfic or fiction. As for the content in question….take it as you will. "Let there be Gargoyles" By Jenna theamazingjenna@hotmail.com In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void: and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Sprit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. Evening came and morning followed, the first day. So it was in the beginning. Near the time of the great flood there were giants upon the earth. They spread evil where ever they went, killing men in great numbers. But this was not the only wickedness on the earth. For God saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth. They slayed each other also in great numbers. And God contemplated all He saw and said, "I will create a new race, to protect the first." And God went to the Mount of Sinai, and said, "Let there be gargoyles." And gargoyles burst forth from the mountian’s side. God saw that the gargoyles were good. Thus the first clan breathed their first breath of life. "I give unto you my power to protect. Go down into the cities of men, and protect my followers from those who would destroy them. " The leader of the gargoyles nodded. The clan went down into the cities of men. They traveled the earth in the cities of men, they protected the few good men from evil both day and night. But the wickedness of man was even too much for the gargoyles, and many of their number were lost. One human the clan protected was called Noah. He and his family were righteous and walked with God. Then one day, God appeared to Noah and the gargoyles and said, "Build an ark, for the evil in the world grieves me, for the evil of men is great, and I regeat that I have made them. I shall send thee one pair of each animal, and you shall take them into the ark. For I will cause it to rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from the face of the earth." Thus the family of Noah and the clan of gargoyles constructed the ark, and filled it with animals as God instructed. And the neighboring men laughed at them, for rain had never fallen from the heavens. But when the heavens did yield forth the rain, the wicked men rushed at the ark. The clan of gargoyles were called upon to defend the ark from being overrun, as the waters began to flood. Were it not for the gargoyles, all on the ark would have perished. For seven months the earth was flooded until the waters subsided and land appeared again. The animals came out of the ark, and filled the land once again with their numbers as did both the humans and gargoyles. And God promised that He would never flood the earth again. But as gargoyles filled the earth, pride also began to swell in their hearts. They began to use their strength that God has bestowed on them to protect, to bully. They became as the humans were before their creation, wicked and prideful. And they forgot the gargoyle way, and the reason they were called forth from the mountain. Now the humans wanted to rise up and punish the gargoyles for their ways, but they could not overpower the gargoyles. And God said to the leader of the gargoyle clan, "Leader, if you cannot control your people, I will find ways to control them." Pride filled the leader’s heart, and hardened it. "My people are the strongest in the world!" He growled, and walked away from God. God grew angry. And so He made it so that when the sun rose that morning, the gargoyles were turned to stone. "Thus you will remember that it was I that called you from the mountain, and breathed life into you." When the humans heard all was quiet at sunrise, they went out to find the source of the silence. At dusk, they found the cave the gargoyles had been in when turned to stone. Anger at the gargoyles consumed the men, and they wrought their vengeance upon them. The humans smashed many of the gargoyles. But when the sun set, the gargoyles burst forth from there stone shells. They saw the slaughter of there own kind, their leader smashed to pieces, and knew that the wrath of God was upon them. Thus they fled into the night. The second of the clan hid in the darkness. God spoke to him. "Gargoyle, have you seen the gargoyles’ second? For the gargoyle leader lies slain, and I wanted to give the gargoyles a gift." God said. The second poked his head out from his hiding place. He shivered, but he did not flee. God was pleased with his courage. "Hear me now, gargoyle. During your stone slumber of the day, all your kind’s wounds shall be healed. From your back wings shall come, so you may ride my winds over the earth. And tell your people to be strong and brave of heart, for they shall never be destroyed."
