1--- Friends in High Places
Ok, Xanatos is drawn incorrectly. (depressingly so, he's hardly ever
handsomeiin the comic). There are plenty of scenes with Broadway "fat-jokes".
However, the overall mood of the book is very similar to Gargoyles with
almost a more sinister feel. Overall, the book has a great start with issue
one. We get into cloning right away(even before the tv series gets into
it). Also, at the time this issue was released, Dr Sevarious had not been
released on the TV series. Thus Dr. Phobos is basically Dr. Sevarious.
One particular page really caught my eye. The second to last two pages
are really striking. It has a bloodied Elisa breaking human test subjects
out of a large ship with Goliath's help. The opening couple of pages are
pretty awesome as well. My only major gripe is that like I said earlier
several of the characters are pretty off in the way they are drawn. This
especially includes Goliath whose face looks pretty fowl. They also have
those toe claw things that alot of fans object to. In the tv series, the
toenails/claws are actually part of the toes and fingures, making them
look like pointy fingures. In the comic however, they are separate and
are pretty rounchy looking. On a whole, good book, with a slightly different
but good flavor. (Oh and did I mention Matt rules?)
2---Always Darkest Before the Dawn
Well, this comic is already proving its not for the kiddy Gargoyles
fans. Just a few pages into issue two we have gun and drugs issues in a
pretty seedy looking "club" called Sacriledge. A girl called
Lavonne sees her boyf shot, we get introduced to a few hookers and Lavonne
gets to be Dr. Phobos' next "experiment". All this considered
once again you have interesting characterizations of Elisa (the character
most often portrayed correctly in these comics), and the overall theme
is quite moody. (A good thing).
3---Rude Awakening
Basically, a "Gargoyles Fight Tony Dragon and Compay" issue.
Broadway meets some friendly humans (who of course feed him), we have some
cute interaction between Elisa and Goliath, Brooklyn gets lost a bit, and
finally we get introduced to ... Lavonne?
4---Blood From a Stone
As we learned from issue #2 Lavonne is Phobos experiment. Turns out,
he turned her into a human/vampire/gargoyle. Fun. The plot (thin one at
that) is that Lavonne is supposed to get Gargoyle blood and bring it back
to Phobos for cloning. She's specifically engineered to attract gargoyles,
so the trio have a big fight over her. She likes Broadway however. (anyone
else see a slight mirror to Angela and Broadway in the tv show?) Interesting
ending btw.
5---Venus in Stone!
Venus, Phobos' prized "project" is introduced, and *gasp*
Elisa dons a new (or at least slightly new) outfit. The Trio try out some
surfing outfits in order to break into Phobos' base, we have more food
jokes with Broadway, and a pretty awesome battle of wills between Demona
and Xanatos. (Xanatos wins by the way).
6---Venus Rising
I still haven't been able to find this issue, but basically, Venus
is a cross between Elisa and Goliath's DNA, and she sure exploits that
against Goliath. They named her Venus for a reason, and like Lavonne she
has a pretty shortlived life.
7---The Pack Attacks!
Demona meets the Triad, the Pack escapes from jail, and Xanatos has
a pretty awesome nightmare. Besides that however, this is one of the lamest
issues. Lets just say Lex has a pretty dumb reaction to the Pack.
8---Terror in Times Square
OK, all this Pack and Virtual Reality stuff is really getting lame.
If you thought the last issue was bad... The only thing redeemable about
this issue is Elisa and Haile's reaction. You might compare Haile to Jason
Castaway (cept he works in a morgue.) Other than that and the lil "interaction"
between Fox and Xanatos, this issue is a bomb. You might want to know that
this Fox and Xanatos thing was published before the tv series had the same
occurance.
9---The Egg and I
We're re-introduced to the Triad who worship Demona and are trying
to "hatch" a centuries old egg. Of course Demona loves this prospect.
The Triad are pretty cool, and this issue is definitely back to the caliber
of the first few compared to the horrendous Pack issues. Elisa gets a slightly
different outfit, we get the pleasure of seeing Demona in all her destructive
glory... overall a good episode.
10--Out of the Past
Goliath's pretty upset about the "non-hatching" of that Gargoyle
egg back in issue 9, and Elisa shares a moment with him, interupted by
the trio of course. This is a pretty heavy issue for Elisa, who finds out
the guy she put away to get her badge, might have been innocent. The real
perp however is causing murderous havoc around town, and Elisa is in serious
danger. The Gargoyles aren't available for help, however.
11--Into the Future
This issue starts out with a character looking ALOT like the archmage.
Unfortunately, since this is the last issue, we never find out what he
has to do with anything. The only thing we find out is that he somehow
revives Venus (who is stone on the bottom of the sea). We have a side story
with the trio trying to find Bronx who saves some gang-type kids from a
fire. Elisa in the meantime catches the real perp and wants to turn her
badge in since she got it for putting someone innocent behind bars. Chavez
doesn't let her of course. Bronx gets back with the clan, and Elisa and
Goliath share a moment (once again interrupted by the trio). We're told
that the next episode wil be "The Day the Sun Kissed the Earth".
Of course that issue never sees the sun. (ehehe, sorry, just couldn't help
myself)
