Griff was born in England. Griff became very outgoing with very strong beliefs in protecting, and will go into a project whole heartedly. Within time Griff and his rookery kin, Una and Leo, would soon own a little magic shop in London around the 1930's. When World War II started, Griff took part, without hesitation, when the war came to London during the air raids of the Battle of Britain in 1940. One night, while fighting the Nazi planes, Griff saved Goliath, who had traveled back in time with the Phoenix Gate to save Griff from some unknown fate, from being hit by a plane. Goliath and Griff quickly became friends, and Griff took him back to the magic shop and introduced him to Una and Leo. Griff, Leo, and Una explained how life was hard in this time period. Una and Leo felt that they should just protect their home and not get involved with human affairs. Griff felt differently. He felt that they should help the humans stop the war. Griff turned to Goliath for his input and he told him that he felt that human problems eventually become gargoyle problems. With Goliath backing him, Griff was even more determined to go out and fight. At this point Una asked Goliath to keep Griff safe. After saving a few English pilots, Griff and Goliath were heading back to the magic shop, when they were mistaken for an enemy plane and shot at by their own side. Griff and Goliath then landed on the roof of a nearby building, when the building next to them, that had suffered heavy damage, started to fall toward Griff. Goliath quickly pushed him to safety and both glided to the street below, where Griff was almost hit by a truck. Griff was wondering if the night was ever fated to end. At this point Goliath knew that the past could not be changed and that Griff was never meant to go home in 1940. Goliath then used the Phoenix Gate to bring himself and Griff forward in time to 1995. Griff then meet back up with Una and Leo, and they began protecting London once more. One night Griff meet up with King Arthur Pendragon, who had broken into a church to pray. Upon finding Arthur, who had found the Stone of Destiny, he found that he was looking for his sword, Excalibur. The Stone said that Excalibur was no longer in England and that Arthur had to tell him where it was, in order to take Arthur to it. Griff then remembered a riddle told to him as a hatchling....
The lady waits for him alone Ebon glass in emerald frame Pure white lilies speak her name Blood red bane in dragon stone Excalibur waits for him alone When Arthur repeated the first line of the riddle the Stone of Destiny transported Arthur and Griff to Manhattan. Once there they met up with the Trio and Hudson. They also confronted MacBeth and his goons, Banquo and Fleance, who they all quickly got rid of. The gargoyles helped Griff and Arthur to figure out the rest of the riddle, taking them to the Lady of the Lake, who was now in Central Park, and she told them that the sword was in a garden maze in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, in a stone dragon that was located in the center of this maze. All during this time MacBeth had been listening in on what they were talking about and was planning on beating Arthur to Excalibur, so that he would be the Once and Future King. When Griff, Arthur and the others got to the maze, they were attacked by MacBeth's thugs and, except for Griff and Arthur, were taken down hard. Griff and Arthur made their way to the middle of the maze but MacBeth got there first, and took the sword out from the dragon. Just before Arthur was going to admit defeat, the stone dragon came to life and attacked MacBeth, Arthur, and Griff. When it turned out that the sword MacBeth had was a fake, the dragon took MacBeth, Arthur, and Griff and flew off. At that time the Manhattan gargoyles took care of MacBeth's thugs and followed after the dragon. Arthur then figured out the sword Excalibur was inside the dragon. Griff freed Arthur from the dragon's grip, and Arthur then busted a hole in the dragon's chest, and retrieved Excalibur from it. When MacBeth realized that Arthur truly was the Once and Future King, Arthur made peace with him. Because of Griff's bravery and assistance during Arthur's quest, Griff was knighted and became Arthur's first new knight. When last seen, Griff was going to accompany Arthur on his quest to find Merlin. |
