The origins of the Banshee are unknown. Over 2000 years ago, she was a foe of the Irish hero Cu Chulainn. Since Oberon's banishment of all the Children in 995, she probably dwelled in Ulster, Ireland. In recent years, she sensed that Cu Chulainn had been reincarnated within a young man named Rory Dugan. She also sensed that he was having visions about his heritage, and decided to stop her ancient enemy from emerging before Rory ever realized his potential. The fay kept an eye on him by assuming the mortal form of a young redhead girl named Molly. She became his girlfriend and they got into mischief all over the city they lived in, all the while making sure Rory did not discover that her ancient foe resided within him. Around 1996, the Banshee noted that the time of the Gathering approached. She did not want to leave Ireland. One night, Goliath, Angela, Elisa Maza and Bronx showed up, traveling through the Mists of Avalon. The Banshee immediately sensed their presence, possibly due to the scent of Avalon's magic upon them. She sang a keening wail that was so loud and so painful, that as Goliath and company tried to escape, it proved to much for them, and they fell into a peat bog, and were rendered unconscious, but not before the Banshee rescued them and placed them in her cairn, leaving Bronx because she felt he could tell her nothing. The Banshee appeared to Angela, Goliath and Elisa, telling them that she wished to know what Oberon planned for her, thinking they were sent to bring her back to Avalon. She let it be known that the Gathering approached and that she had no desire to leave. Confused and not knowing what she was talking about, the group could not help her, and she flew into a rage, keening and wailing until they all fell to their knees in agony. Meanwhile, Bronx had found Rory, who was now bewildered by the extent and clarity of the visions and feelings he was experiencing. The appearance of Bronx, or as Rory thought, the legendary Hound of Ulster, convinced him their may be a kernel of truth to his bizarre thoughts. The Banshee sensed that Rory had found the Hound (Bronx) and knew that his doubts about his heritage were dwindling, so she left the reeling Goliath and company to appear to Rory in her mortal form as Molly, probably hoping to draw him away from the truth once more. Bronx saw through her mortal form, however, and attacked, forcing her to reveal her true fay self to Rory. She blasted Bronx away, and Rory, having just seen his love grow a "foot of height and a yard of hair" was shocked and easy prey for her mesmerizing song, and she led him away into the darkness. She apparently tried to make him think it was all a dream, just another of his crazy visions, and left him at his house, where he awoke the next morning. Meeting him soon after he awoke as Molly, she was dismayed to find out that he was more adamant than ever in discovering the truth. As Rory made his way to the cairn where Cu Chulainn's grave was, Molly followed trying futilely to talk him out of it. The visions grew in strength and number, and in the cairn, Rory discovered the Spear of Light, Cu Chulainn's weapon, and the being within him emerged, brought to life once more. Banshee shed her mortal form and was enraged at her inability to keep her ancient foe in check. A battle broke out, and in the process, Goliath, Angela, and Elisa were free to join Bronx and Cu Chulainn against the Banshee, who battled using her musical magic and transforming into Crom-Cruach, the death worm. However, ultimately, the Spear of Light defeated her, and she was dispersed into the winds like a smoke cloud, her keen finally silenced. But she was not dead, and it is unknown how she survived. A few weeks later, she was brought to the Gathering against her will by the Weird Sisters. Enraged, she needed little provocation by Odin to attack him, and a short battle ensued until she was frozen and reverted to her natural form by Lord Oberon. She stood helplessly as he condemned her for not coming when called and sealed her mouth shut with a magically conjured metal band as punishment, silencing her voice. As she stared in horror, he stated it would only be removed when she showed 'true humility in her silent plea.' The Banshee's fate is unknown at this time. She currently remains on Avalon against her will, cut off from the bulk of her siren powers. |
